How it works: Chord Analysis

Chord Analysis — User Guide

What does it do?

Chord Analysis automatically recognises the chords in a song. Upload an MP3 and you’ll get:

  • A chord grid showing the chords per bar
  • The key and tempo (BPM)
  • A ChordPro file to download or copy
  • The lyrics with section labels (Part 1, Part 2…)

How to use it

Step 1 — Get an MP3

You need an MP3 file of the song you want to analyse.

No MP3? Go to ytmp3.gg, paste the YouTube link of the song and download the MP3.

Step 2 — Choose the file

Click Choose file and select the MP3 from your computer or phone.

Step 3 — Enter title and artist

Fill in the title and artist. This is required — the system uses this information to look up the correct lyrics.

Tip: use the original artist, not a cover artist. For a cover of Randy Crawford: enter “Randy Crawford” as the artist.

Step 4 — Click Analyse

Click the ▶ Analyse button. The analysis usually takes 1 to 3 minutes depending on the length of the song.

The results

Grid

Shows the chords per bar. Beat numbers 1-2-3-4 are displayed above each bar.

  • Sections — toggle section labels on/off (Intro, Part 1…)
  • Lyrics — toggle to show the lyrics per section in the grid
  • Bars — set how many bars are displayed side by side (1 to 4)
  • Transpose — transpose the chords up or down in semitones

ChordPro

A standardised format for chords with lyrics, compatible with apps like OnSong, Songbook and Ultimate Guitar. You can download the file (.cho) or copy it to the clipboard.

Frequently asked questions

The analysis takes a long time or shows an error
The analysis engine can occasionally be temporarily overloaded. Wait a minute and try again.

The chords are not quite right
Automatic chord recognition is not 100% accurate, especially for complex jazz or classical pieces. Use the results as a starting point.

The lyrics are wrong or missing
Check that you have entered the correct title and artist. For covers, enter the original artist. Not all songs are available in the lyrics database.

The key seems wrong
The key is automatically calculated based on the detected chords and is an estimate. When in doubt, trust your own ear.

Which file formats are supported?
MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC and AAC.
